Social Media in Recruitment – Where Are They Now?

It’s hard to believe that it was 2 years ago this month (16th July 2009) that I ran the first dedicated Social Media in Recruitment Conference in the UK.

Considering it was such a brand new event (and topic) it was very well supported, even though there were people at the time (and there still are) that thought Social Media was a passing fad and would eventually go away!

Well it seems that the social media fad didn’t go away and the whole area of Social Media continues to grow, with the recent addition of Google + as the latest offering to join the party.

Social Media User Stats

I remember clearly when Josh Smith from Facebook proudly announced on the 16th July 2009 that Facebook had just reached 250 million members (they will probably hit the 1 billion members figure sometime in the next 12 months).

And back in July 2009 LinkedIn had 42 million members worldwide (they now have over 100 million members) and Twitter had around 7 million members compared to the 200 million members they have today!

(By the way, did you know that Twitter users generate 350 million tweets a day and Twitter handles over 1.6 billion search queries per day – (Source: Wikipedia). Not bad for an idea that many said would never take-off!)

Success Stories

One of the most pleasing things for me about putting a programme together for my Conferences (whether it is the Social Media in Recruitment Conference or our sister Conference – Mobile & Video in Recruitment) is that I am able to invite delegates back from previous Conferences to share their success stories as a result of implementing what they learnt the previous year.

To see just how popular the Success Stories from Jonathan Hart-Smith and Elkie Holland were when I introduced the concept last year take a look at the video below:

Where Are They Now?

Following on from the two Social Media Success Stories in 2010 I am pleased to announce that I have spoken with both Elkie and Jonathan and over the coming weeks I will be catching up with them to report on their Social Media progress even further.

I still remember how Jonathan was so inspired by the YouTube presentation that he ordered a video camera straight after leaving the Conference venue and before he caught the train home. Talk about taking swift action! I also remember how Elkie would send her clients a pig on Farmville!

I am really looking forward to those interviews to see how they have progressed.

To make sure you are notified once the interviews are published register to be notified in the top right hand corner of the site.
